Ascenders snach ropes like a pulley, but only allow the rope to go through in one direction. They have many
uses but they're most often used to climb ropes. Another common use is to act as an automatic safety line that
can follow a climber on a rope without resistance, but catch them in the event of a fall. The teeth are carefully
designed to glide over the rope in one direction without damaging or wearing on it, and to tightly grip the rope
when it tries to move in the other direction.

Most ascenders also have a latch that can be operated to allow the rope to move in the direction it would normally
grip, to allow repositioning without detaching the rope from the ascender.
